Disaster Services
The American Red Cross- Disaster Services helps those in the community to prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters. Although the huge hurricanes, floods, and tornados are the events best known, 93% of all disaster relief occurs at single family house fires. Volunteers, when called, respond to the scene to assist clients with the immediate, disaster-caused needs of food, clothing, and temporary shelter.
In addition, we participate in community programs, health fairs, and drills to better our skills before the disaster happens. In addition, we conduct regular trainings to make sure that we, and our partners, are ready to quickly and efficiently respond to meet the needs of a community when a disaster occurs.
Volunteers come in many forms, and will participate in a wide variety of activities. Groups can participate to train to be a shelter or feeding team, or provide facilities for us to use. Since the Red Cross is not a government agency, our ability to assist the community lies primarily in the donations it receives. We welcome groups who wish to coordinate fund raisers for us, so that we can continue to serve those suffering from a disaster.
Individuals can help clients "hands on" immediately on the scene as a DAT responder; those with computer skills can learn to enter the files and create and maintain informational data bases. In addition, all Red Cross disaster classes taken through the chapter are FREE. For our disaster volunteers who have obtained forty
(40) disaster volunteer hours in the year are eligible for a free first aid/CPR class through disaster services.
All are encouraged to become active in helping their community; if you are interested, please contact the chapter at 804-733-5711. In addition, everyone is welcome at our monthly disaster meeting in Petersburg. It is the 4th Monday night of each month (excluding December) at 6:30pm (3267-A South Crater Rd. Petersburg, VA 23805); the meeting will be re-scheduled should the fourth Monday fall on a holiday.
We also have a disaster services volunteer meeting the second Monday of every-other month in Farmville (November, January, March, May, July, September) at 6:30pm at 1700C South Main St., Farmville, VA 23901.
We look forward for the opportunity to work with you soon!
